Is It Time for an Eye Exam?

If you can’t recall when you had your last eye exam, you may be passing up your best opportunity to protect your eyesight. A thorough examination by an optometrist or ophthalmologist is the only way to ensure that your eyes are healthy.

There are many conditions that threaten your eyesight, such as cataracts, glaucoma or macular degeneration, but there are usually few obvious signs or symptoms in the early stages. Catching conditions like these early can result in successful treatment.

Even if you think your eyes are healthy, regular eye exams are important for detecting and treating problems before they lead to vision loss. Use these recommendations from the American Optometric Association to schedule your eye exams:

  • Children from 6 to 18: Before first grade and then every two years
  • Adults from 18 to 40: Every two to three years
  • Adults from 41 to 60: Every one to two years
  • Adults 61 and older: Every year
  • Adults who wear glasses or contacts: Every year

Patients with diabetes, hypertension, or a family history of ocular disease (e.g., glaucoma, macular degeneration), those who work in occupations that are hazardous to the eyes, those who take prescription or nonprescription drugs that affect the eyes, those who have had eye surgery, and those with other health concerns or conditions should have more frequent eye exams.
