Why eye exams are so important

Eye Doctor Appointment in Cape Coral

Annual eye exams are crucial for detecting diseases like diabetes, glaucoma and macular degeneration. A comprehensive eye exam is the best guarantee of early detection of these diseases. Many diseases have no early signs. Diabetes, for example, can damage the blood vessels in the eyes, but patients often have no symptoms until it is too late and the damage is done.

As cases of diabetes are rapidly on the rise, we are seeing many more patients with resultant eye conditions. Diabetes is now the number one cause of blindness in the United States, and people with diabetes are 25 times more likely to suffer vision loss. The condition in which diabetes causes major retinal blood vessel damage is called diabetic retinopathy. Leaky vessels can soon lead to severe vision loss if the condition is left undetected and untreated.

If you have diabetes or have been recently diagnosed with the condition, it is very important for you to come see us for regular eye exams. Know that with proper eye care, the large majority of patients can avoid vision loss. Keep in mind that at the very early stages, diabetic retinopathy shows no signs or symptoms and patients have little to no change in vision, so please call our office to schedule this important appointment.

Glaucoma is similar to diabetes in that it has no early symptoms. Although the disease affects over four million Americans, only about half realize they have it.

We recommend annual eye exams for all our patients over 60. We prefer a dilated eye exam because it allows us to readily see and examine the internal structures of the eye. Many patients don’t want to take the time to have their eyes dilated, but the benefits outweigh any inconvenience. These days, the aftereffects of a dilated eye exam fade quickly.

We also treat many patients who experience the discomfort of dry eye, a very common condition. We can do tests to determine the severity of your dry eye condition, and prescribe artificial tears to help lubricate the eyes to maintain moisture.
