Fort Myers Cataract Treatment

Cataracts are a natural part of aging. They cannot be prevented, and surgery is the only remedy. By the time people reach age 60, many will have an early cataract, and by age 75, the cataracts usually become significant enough to affect vision. There is great Fort Myers cataract treatment available at Elmquist Eye Group. We’ve been serving southwest Florida for 25 years.

Do I need surgery now?

Fort Myers Cataract TreatmentWhen should surgery be done? If your cataract is affecting your vision enough that your daily activities are affected, you should consider surgery. We will definitely recommend surgery at this point. Ask yourself whether you can perform daily tasks like driving, cooking, reading and watching television without difficulty. If you can’t, it is likely time for surgery, and our surgeons will have a detailed discussion with you regarding whether surgery is appropriate. We will discuss whether you are a good candidate and also discuss your expected post-surgical outcome and then decide together whether surgery is right for you right now.

What can I expect from cataract surgery?

We perform this surgery on an outpatient basis. We give you local anesthesia for comfort. We use a form of bladeless laser-assisted surgery to remove the cloudy capsule and restore your clear vision. During cataract surgery, the cloudy lens is removed from the eye and is replaced with a permanent intraocular lens implant. We use the LenSx system developed by Alcon; it is the first femtosecond laser system to receive FDA approval for cataract procedures.

These lenses are so advanced that we can even correct your nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. While artificial lenses have been around for about 50 years, only recently have lenses advanced in technology to the point of giving you lots of choices in the type of lens implant you have. We certainly want you to be fully informed of these options prior to your cataract surgery, and we will help you select the best implant for your long term visual needs.

Our goal is for you to have a pleasant surgical experience, so we do extensive preparation prior to surgery. We will perform several measurements to determine which implants may be the best for your eyes. After the surgery, you have to take it easy for a few days but generally you can return to most activities almost immediately. We will send you home with eye drops and schedule several postoperative visits to check on the progress of your eye as it heals. We only perform surgery on one eye at a time, but as soon as the first eye heals, we can do surgery on the other, if needed.
