Tell me more about bifocal contact lenses

Bifocal Contact Lenses Cape CoralIf your close-up vision has changed and you have to move printed items farther away to read them, you may have age-related farsightedness, called presbyopia. This is a very common condition that affects millions of Americans over age 40 each year. Reading glasses will help but if you don’t relish the thought of carrying reading glasses around with you, bifocal contacts may be a great option.

For many of our patients who have worn contact lenses for years, the transition to bifocal contact lenses will be easy. You may be a bit disoriented or have some minor eye strain as you adjust, but most patients adjust in a week or two. Chronic dry eye occurs more often in people over age 45, so you may have more discomfort with all contact lenses at this age. Let us know during your exam if you have been experiencing dry eye. The lenses will be customized to include two prescriptions, one for the presbyopia and one to correct any other refractive error you have.

Am I a candidate?

Our eye doctors consider two factors, your pupil size and the prescription you will need for the presbyopia. There are various types of bifocal contacts, and aspheric lenses are best for mild or moderate prescriptions while segmented or concentric lenses tend to work best for more severe cases of presbyopia.

The results of a thorough contact lens examination will determine your optimal lens, and we will likely have you try on different lenses to find the ideal fit. We will also discuss your expectations for your new bifocal lenses, your daily activities and lifestyle to choose the best option.

If you are a good candidate for these lenses, we will send you home with a trial pair so you can see how your eyes adjust to the new lenses. We’ll have you back in a couple of weeks to see how it is going and to finalize your prescription.

If you are over 40 and have noticed your close-up vision getting worse, you may want to consider bifocal contact lenses as your new eyewear. You can fix your near vision and you won’t have to wear reading glasses. Bifocal contact lenses are available in our Cape Coral offices at Elmquist Eye Center.
